Rolling speed is part of his [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_average moving average] algorithm, basically how much new values supersede older ones based on time.

I assume shape functions here he means the shape of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(statistics) kernel function] he uses.

Shape functions are part of the distance function then.
